Getting the most out of random games in chat

When to bring a game into a random chat, and how. How to use one to revive a stalling conversation, and how to let the result do the talking.

There is a right moment for a game

Bring a game up at the wrong time and it looks like you are avoiding the conversation. Bring it up at the right time and the conversation gets another life. The right moment is fairly predictable.

Three signs the conversation has stalled

Answers get shorter, only laughter comes back, and you both start repeating the same question. Any one of those means the topic is spent.

A game works far better here than one more question bolted onto a dead thread.

A game is not a substitute for talking

If you use the game to fill silence, the silence comes straight back when it ends. It is a way to keep talking — the reaction to the result is the actual content.

How to suggest it

If you make it sound like a big deal, they will find it hard to say no. Light is better for both of you.

Offer, do not insist

"Bit bored, want to try one of the games?" leaves them room to choose, and that phrasing works noticeably better than a firm invitation.

If they decline

That is not a rejection of you. Moving straight to "okay, tell me something else then" keeps the mood intact. Just do not ask twice.

Keep talking during the game

It is easy to go quiet while you are both looking at the board. The longer that lasts, the more awkward the end of the round feels.

The result is the fun part

Winning matters far less than what you say about the outcome. "That was pure luck" or "one more, I was warming up" is what turns a game into a conversation.

Let the game lead somewhere else

Take the game back out into normal conversation. From "you're good at this" you can reach "do you play things like this anyway?" and you have a new topic.

After the game ends

The end of a round is the fork in the road. Cross it naturally and the chat continues. Miss it and the chat ends with the game.

One more, then something else

Playing round after round does not build anything. One or two is right, then move to whatever the game brought up.

Signalling the way back

"Anyway, I wanted to ask you about earlier" returns you to the conversation you had before the game, which makes clear the game was a detour and not the point.
